What's in a Name?

Grandmothers and grandfathers are called by various different names nowadays, although rarely are they called 'grandmother' or 'grandfather'.

When my oldest child began learning to speak she called my mother 'Nonna'. We aren't sure why, but it turned out that nonna meant grandmother in Italian. I doubt my two year old knew that but the name stuck and my mother has been called Nonna ever since.

My father-in-law was called Grandad by his first three grandchildren. The fourth one, however, chose a more practical name - "Hattie".

My father-in-law has been a civil attorney for decades. Every day that he went to work he always wore a hat. When he left for work he put on his hat, when he came home he took it off and hung it on his hook. For about two years my nephew continued to call him Hattie. He eventually began calling him Grandad to be like the other grandchildren; but we still fondly remember Hattie.

I came across another unusual name for grandfather just yesterday. I customized a complimentary gift card for a customer and the closing was, "With love, MeMe and Muddee". It's adorable! I just hope for MeMe's sake that the name wasn't acquired the same way Hattie was!!

Funnel Cake

A favorite summer food - yes, I consider funnel cakes food! We found a great recipe for this favorite treat, just like the ones you get at a local fair.

Our recipe comes from Moms Who Think. This recipe makes cakes that are light and fluffy. The recipe is simple to follow and it doesn't take a lot of time.

You'll be the best mom on the block with this treat.

Ingredients:

1 egg

2/3 cup milk

2 Tablespoons sugar

1 1/4 cup flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

Directions:

1. In a deep skillet, heat about two cups of oil over medium-high heat. Test the temperature by dropping a pinch of flour into the hot oil. If it sizzles right away without smoking, it's perfect.

2. Beat egg and milk. Mix all other ingredients in a separate bowl and slowly add to the egg mixture, beating until smooth.

3. Using a funnel, drop batter into hot oil working from center outwards in a web pattern. (You can use a gallon size freezer bag instead of a funnel by pouring the batter into the bag and snipping off a small corner.)

4. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, remove from the oil when golden brown and crispy.

5. Place on waiting paper towel and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

This recipe is definitely a 'keeper'!

Caring for Pearl Jewelry

Pearls are soft gemstones and need special care to maintain their quality and luster. Never store your pearls alongside other hard jewelry such as gemstones or metals. Pearls should be stored in a soft pouch or soft-lined jewelry box.

Pearls need moisture and they can be damaged by dry air. Pearl jewelry should be kept away from heat and sun as they will dry out, turn brown, and may crack.

Pearls do best if worn often. However, contrary to popular belief, the oils from skin are not good for pearls and they will need occasional cleaning. To clean your pearls soak a clean towel in warm water with a mild soap such as Ivory or an all-natural soap. Gently rub your pearls in the towel, then rinse off the soap with another moist (non-soapy) towel.

Never use dish detergent, laundry detergent, baking soda, or any cleaner on pearls. Do not use a toothbrush or other abrasive material as the pearls will be damaged.

After cleaning your pearls, lay them flat in a slightly moist kitchen towel to dry. When the towel is dry, the pearls should be dry too.

After wearing your pearls, wipe them off with a soft cloth (either dry or damp). This will prevent the accumulation of body oils and dirt. Occasionally use a drop of olive oil on the cloth to help maintain the luster of your pearls.

With good care, quality pearls can last for generations. Our high quality pearl baby bracelets can be worn by little ones now and passed on to future little ones!

Aquamarine - March Birthstone

The birthstone for March is aquamarine, which comes in light blue to a dark blue color. The name is derived from its seawater color. The deep blue stones are more valued, and it can sometimes be confused with blue topaz. The bluish-green colored stones are most recognized as aquamarine.

Aquamarine gets it color from iron and is found in coarse-grained granite. The Moh's hardness is a 7.5 - 8; so it's not a delicate stone. Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family along with morganite (pink) and emerald (green).

The best source for aquamarines is Brazil, but it can also be found in Australia, India, Kenya, and other countries. The largest specimen of morganite was found in coastal Maine.

It is believed to bring the wearer a peaceful sense of calm. I think I need to wear aquamarine more often!

Southern Sweet Tea

There is nothing more wonderful than a cold glass of Southern sweet tea! Southerners just seem to know how to make iced tea that is absolutely wonderful.

Being a southerner, I can say it isn't difficult, but it does have to be done correctly. If you have never had this wonderful tea, give it a try.

This is how I make it:

Bring approximately 2 and 3/4 cups of water just to a boil. Remove from heat and put in 5-6 tea bags to steep with the pot lid on. I use Luzianne tea, but unless you are located in the south, you may not be able to find this brand. Usually a store brand is a good substitute; Nestea® and Lipton® are not good substitutes.

Let the tea steep for about 30 minutes or so. The longer it steeps, the darker it becomes. Then take out the tea bags; put them in a spoon and wrap the string around the spoon and bags to "squeeze" out the liquid.

Now pour the tea into a pitcher that will hold about 1 1/2 quarts. Pour 1 1/2 - 2 cups of sugar in the hot (this is important) tea and stir. Run the water from your faucet until hot, and slowly fill the pitcher with hot water. Stir the tea while adding the water. The hot water is important as otherwise the sugar will not dissolve and it won't taste right.

A 'foam' will develop on top while you are adding the hot water. Just scoop it off with a spoon. Then place the pitcher in the refrigerator to cool the tea. If kept in the refrigerator, the tea will stay good for several days - if you can keep it that long.

Add ice to glasses and pour yourself a glass of Southern sweet tea! The best there is.

Our Boy David

Years ago while window shopping I came across this bust, well really it's just a head, but I liked it. So I purchased it and brought it home to live in our dining room.

My youngest child was in middle school and she and her friends began calling him 'David'. I explained the statue was of a Greek youth and not from the statue of David by Michelangelo. My explanation was met with blank stares.

So, for awhile, they began calling him "the Boy". Then it became "the Boy, David". Eventually it was just David. I gave up, and he has been known at our house as David for many years now.

Over the years David has acquired a large and varied wardrobe. I'm not sure anymore how it started but there is a large box in my hall closet that holds David's accessories.

Now when my grandchildren visit they love to change David's costumes. They make a quick stop in the dining room to make sure David is dressed properly for the season.

David is currently dressed for winter; this is his January outfit. It's probably a little hot for winter in Louisiana and the ski cap doesn't do much for his curls, but he's never complained.

"The Boy" has managed to carve out a special place for himself and become part of an odd family tradition. But we enjoy him.

I'll try to chronicle some of his other costumes throughout the year.

Spectacular New Years' Dessert

Chocolate Yule Log

This fantastic dessert is my family's New Year's tradition. We don't do the cabbage and peas thing; we have opted, instead, for a yule log. This one is chocolate sponge cake rolled with ice cream and covered in chocolate glaze. Yummy!

Even though it is spectacular looking, it is also fairly easy to make. You can also make it ahead of time so it's great for the busy holidays.

You will find the basic recipe below but we have also made a "Pictorial Recipe" for anyone who is new to jelly roll cakes. Plenty of pictures are included so you will be sure of getting it right.

Jelly Roll Cake:

4 egg yolks

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

4 egg whites

1/2 cup sugar

2/3 cup sifted cake flour (or our substitute)

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup cocoa

Beat egg yolks till thick and lemon-colored; gradually beat in 1/4 cup sugar; add vanilla. Beat egg whites till soft peaks form; gradually add 1/2 cup sugar and beat till stiff peaks form. Fold yolks into whites. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt; fold into egg mixture.

Spread batter evenly in greased and lightly floured 15 1/2 X 10 1/2 X 1-inch jelly roll pan (or cookie sheet with sides). Bake in 375 degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes.

Immediately loosen sides and turn out on towel sprinkled with sifted confectioners' sugar. Starting at narrow end, roll cake and towel together; cool on rack.

Unroll; spread with ice cream; roll back up and freeze. Cover with Chocolate Glaze.

Chocolate Glaze:

1/2 cup sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch

1 1-ounce square unsweetened chocolate

Dash salt

1 1/2 tablespoons butter or margarine

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Combine sugar and cornstarch; add chocolate, salt, and 1/2 cup water. Cook and stir till thickened and bubbly and chocolate melts. Remove from heat; add butter and vanilla. Stir well and frost rolled cake while glaze is hot.

The Necessary Gift

Calling all mothers!

Here is a gift for your kids you probably hadn't thought to give. But I think it is a necessary item. I am amazed at the people who have no idea where the different states are located.

They will certainly be handicapped as adults without this knowledge. Apparently, the schools no longer teach geography and it is up to you to provide this valuable knowledge.

Recently I have had the US postal service contact me that a package I shipped would unfortunately be late arriving at its destination. Alas, after leaving Louisiana, they shipped a package bound for Ohio by way of Colorado! So, yes, I can understand it might be a few days late arriving.

And of course, in order for a package to go from New York to Louisiana, the post office deemed it necessary to send it to Orlando, Florida first! (I hope it had a good time in Disney).

My business is located in Monroe, LA. I have had a number of customers call and ask if they could come by and pick up their order since they live just outside of Los Angeles. They seem to feel I am insulting their driving skills when I tell them it will take them 3 days to get here.

And for those who have asked, "No, Louisiana is NOT in New Orleans"! It is a state, it shares a border with Texas, and "Yes, dear, Texas is also a state."

Mothers, please, you do not want your children to ask silly questions when they are adults! Toys R Us has a United States puzzle-map for just $7.99. You should buy one for your child, and probably an extra for his school!

July 4th Rice Krispie Treats

What a kid-friendly idea! The Mommy Insider has this wonderful Rice Krispies treat recipe that is perfect for your Independence Day celebration. Admit it, everyone loves Rice Krispies treats, and this looks absolutely wonderful.

Years ago when I started making these with my children we used the original recipe that was published. Since then, I've discovered that the recipe has been changed.

I'm so glad I had the good sense to write down the original recipe all those years ago. My copy is a little smeared and yellowed, but still readable. For all of you who have never tried the original, you're going to love it!

1/4 cup butter

1 10oz. pkg. (about 40) regular marshmellows or

4 cups miniture marshmellows

4- 5 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Melt butter in large saucepan over low heat. Add marshmellows and stir until melted and well blended. Cook 2 minutes longer, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Add cereal and stir until well coated. Press mixture evenly into buttered 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan. Cut when cooled.

Let the kids help and have a great time!

Natural Baby Products

We've opened a new store!

Gingham Too carries a line of all natural products for babies and children. I love the all natural baby lotion in 2 different scents; Laughing Lavender and Rosy Giggles (my favorite).

All of the products are made with natural butters and oils, natural powders, clays, minerals, and botanicals. There are so many quality ingredients available that are actually good for your skin, why do we settle for the chemical-loaded products that are mass produced?

Babies and children have sensitive skin and many have allergies that are worsened by all the chemicals in the products on the market. My own grandchildren have skin conditions that are aggravated by these products.

So after much research and work, we have developed some wonderful, all natural skin care products. My whole family has started using these products, and it's amazing how skin responds to natural ingredients.

I have dry skin and use the After Bath Oil when I get out of the shower; now I don't start itching as soon as I dry off. And if you've never used an all natural soap-- you must try it! I highly recommend Goat Milk soap, its heaven.

A Vegetable Pot for Kids

An easy summer idea for kids!

Get your children interested in gardening by letting them grow their own vegetables. There are a number of easy-to-grow vegetables that are suitable for growing in pots.

Radishes are the easiest and they grow quickly, which is a plus when dealing with children. Radishes are ready to eat in about 30 days (if they aren't pulled up sooner!)

Carrots are are another vegetable that is easy to grow in pots. They work well when planted with the radishes.

Chives are my personal favorite. I love the flowering tops and I like to put chives in just about everything! If your kids won't eat radishes, they may enjoy growing something, like chives, that you can use in cooking.

You may be able to interest older children in growing flowers in pots in their school colors if they aren't interested in vegetables!

Just about any pot will do as long as it is at least 10 inches in diameter and about 12 inches deep. Plastic pots work best as they don't dry out as quickly. You can even recycle an old plastic bucket, or something you have on hand. Just make sure the container has drainage holes in the bottom.

Put a small layer of gravel in the bottom of the container, or cover the hole with a few layers of coffee filters to prevent the soil from washing out; then fill with sterile compost mixed with topsoil. It's easiest to just buy a bag from the garden center.

Keep the containers watered and feed the vegetables every two weeks.

Graduation Invitations

My youngest daughter has finally graduated from college! This child has never been the 'typical' girl; not interested in shopping, clothes, or bling. She graduated in Equine Science... horses, almost her only interest. She also received a minor in psychology. Hmm, can't you just see the horses stretched out on a couch in her office...?

What is typical, for her, is that she never even considered graduation invitations. Until three days before they had to be mailed! Then she mentioned to me that she hadn't ordered any. Yipes! That meant we (I say we), had to make them ourselves.

Actually, this turned out very good. I already had some linen card stock and matching envelopes. Now I needed a design and the proper wording for the inside. I hunted around the internet and found a simple design for the front that my printer could handle. Her college website offered official logos that could be downloaded at no charge.

I found various styles of wording for college invitations, and chose the one I liked best. Then I had to make sure exactly how her degree was worded, where the ceremony would take place and when. Once I had the wording in place, I decided it needed a little something extra. I used a black graphic of a running horse and put it behind the wording. It was opaque enough to see, but faint enough to easily read. It looked great!

We had a good picture of her with one of her saddles in the background on a hitching post, so we decided to use it. In my photo program I turned the picture into a black and white, then copied it onto velum. We applied the picture inside the invitations with double-sided tape; after all the printing had been done.

Her college invitations were absolutely perfect for her! Doing the invitations ourselves meant we could customize them just for her. And my unfussy girl(?) was delighted with them.

It wasn't a difficult project, but I would suggest giving yourself more than three days to do it.

Dr. Seuss Can be Wrong!

I loved Dr. Seuss as a child, my mother read all the books to my sister and I. So, of course, as a mom I read all the books to my daughters.

Years ago, at the age of 7, my oldest daughter's favorite book was Green Eggs and Ham. At that time the animated special of Green Eggs and Ham played on TV once a year-- she never missed it.

I had the wonderful idea one year to surprise her. When the show was over I made a special supper for her and myself of green eggs and ham (well, the eggs were green anyway- food coloring). I knew she would be delighted!

Well..... I have news for 'Sam, I Am'. She would not eat them on a box, she would not eat them with a fox. She would not eat them in a train, she would not eat them on a plane! As a matter of fact... she wailed!

By the time I finally got her to stop crying, assuring her she did not have to eat the green eggs and ham, they were a cold, soggy mess. We decided to go and get a burger and fries-- she hiccuped the entire time. Then we came home, called her dad, who was (happily for him), out of town; and went to bed.

Weeber, The Tree Frog

Meet Weeber, a plump tree frog who came to live on our screened-in porch last summer. We're not sure how he snuck in, but we're glad he did.

Weeber made friends with our little cat, Hallelujah, who is partially blind. When we lived in south Louisiana, Hallelujah had plenty of tree frogs to play with; she loved to 'play tag' with them and hop along behind them. She never hurt them, and playing tag with tree frogs was her favorite thing to do. After moving to north Louisiana two years ago, we never even saw a tree frog until Weeber showed up.

Weeber was quite content to play with Hallelujah three evenings a week and didn't seem to be afraid of her. He soon took over the wall fountain (see photo) for his private swimming pool, complete with a shower; found a hidden cranny near the ceiling for a bedroom; and hangs out on a potted palm tree during warm weather.

Weeber made such a "splash" with the family we began purchasing live crickets twice a week for his supper. When we asked the employee at the pet store how long the crickets would last in their container we were told they would live almost a week, but they would live longer if we purchased cricket food for them.

While we really enjoy Weeber, I told the young man at the pet store that I was drawing the line on buying food for my cat's pet's food!

Global Warming Hits Louisiana

Last Thursday and Friday a blast of 'Global Warming' hit Louisiana and we received 3 to 4 inches of snow! This may not seem like much to some people, however, it is a rarity for us. Even as far south as Baton Rouge had 3 inches of snow!

By Saturday the sun had come out again and the snow on the ground was quickly melting. By late afternoon, it was gone. But if you drove through the neighborhoods you saw a very odd-looking sight. The kids, naturally, built snowmen and rolled them out to the edge of their yards.

The snow on the ground and trees melted quickly but the snowmen didn't! So you could drive around and see lots of snowmen sitting in a yard full of green grass and dried leaves!

Amethyst - February's Birthstone

Amethyst is a gorgeous deep purple gemstone, the most precious of the quartz family. It's name is derived from the ancient Greek word methystos, which means "not drunken". It was traditionally worn to guard against drunkenness, and to instill a sober mind! (If attempting to prove/disprove this theory -- please do so only at home!) This idea is why wine goblets were often carved out of amethyst.

Once a highly prized stone the same as diamonds, its value fell when large deposits were found in Brazil and Uruguay in the late 19th century.

Still, it is a beautiful gemstone in a rich purple color, one of the few gemstones that are purple. The color is the result of trace amounts of iron in the crystal structure. Quite often, amethyst is found with milky inclusions in the stone.

Chocolate Chip Valentines!

Are you looking for a new Valentine treat? Need to send something to school for a party? Then this is for you.

These adorable, and yummy, heart-shaped cookies are easy to make and look like you spent hours on them. A few things you need are: your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, plain aluminum cookie cutters (don't use the new colored ones), Hersey's chocolate kisses, and your choice of packaging.

Whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies. Place the aluminum cookie cutters on a cookie sheet (the more you have, the quicker it will be). Use about 1 1/2 tablespoons of dough and lightly press it into the cutter. It doesn't have to fit perfectly, the dough will spread out as it bakes. Bake the cookies 1 minute less than the recipe calls for but don't remove the cookie cutters! Bake the cookies with the cutters still on (as shown).

Take the cookies out of the oven and cool about one minute. (The cookies will "sink" in the middle; if not, press them with the back of a spoon while warm). Remove the cutters and place one or two chocolate kisses on top of each cookie. Put the cookies back in the oven for one minute to melt the chocolate.

Remove the cookies and spread the softened chocolate with the back of a small spoon. The "sunken" center is heart-shaped and makes spreading easy. My family likes chocolate, so we use two kisses. Set the cookies on a rack to cool and re-set the chocolate.

Once the chocolate has re-set, you can wrap and package them any way you like. If you need to speed up the setting, place them in the freezer for about 10 minutes.

Want a Smart Kid?

Read to them! Studies have shown that children who read well do better in school. But, as a mom, the point is not to 'make them read well'. The best thing is to give them a love for reading.

When my children were very young we read "Bedtime Stories", most parents have. For the kids it was a way to put off going to sleep a little longer. But if you choose interesting books for their age, they will get interested.

However, since I was an avid reader, I never quit reading the "Bedtime Stories". When my children started first grade we 'graduated' in our reading choices. (Well, actually, I did-- I wasn't reading any more Berenstain Bears! They are great little books, but I'd had enough of Brother and Sister Bear.)

So I dug out all the wonderful books I had read as a child. Now they call them Children's Classics, and they are, but they are still wonderful books. We did start with Winnie The Pooh (the real book by A. A. Milne) just to sort of break them in. But we continued on with Little Women, Pilgrims Progress, Huckleberry Finn, and many more. Actually, I read to both of my daughters every classic book I could find.

At half a chapter a night, and sometimes the whole chapter, we had gone through the children's classics by the third or fourth grade. The amazing thing was... they were asking for more!

Yes, my throughly modern children who lived in a world of advanced technology, had learned to love those books. Kidnapped, Heidi, The Three Musketeers, even David Copperfield (the one by Charles Dickens) and Great Expectations .

We then turned to more recent authors until finally, the year they started junior high, Mom said, "No more bedtime reading". They whined a week or two but soon got over it.

I had done my job, they loved and enjoyed reading, and still do. And even though I'm the one saying it, they became very intelligent people.

Fall Decorating Idea

Tuesday was the first day of Fall, or Autumn, for most of the country. Here in the Deep South it is "Still Summer" and probably will be until November 1st (or sometimes December 15th). However, we still pretend it is Fall and decorate accordingly.

Need a little glamor on the cheap? Here is a great idea for adding glamor to your Fall table setting. We purchased these ordinary items from a dollar store for fifty cents each. You can probably get them from Goodwill even cheaper.

Then, just use glue. We used hot glue so we could take it apart and use the items again. If you would like it to be permanent, use glass glue, which you can get in a department store.

Now it becomes an elegant footed candleholder for only $1.50! You can make a pair of these for $3.00 in less than ten minutes. Several different styles of votive holders were available besides the square one we used here.

We added the tapestry table runner, another dollar store find at $4.00.

If you live where the trees are turning colors, add some some of the leaves and any other natural elements you can get free. This is a simple project with a big return.

It's back-to-school time and back to packing lunches. Your child has picked out that cool new lunch box that he or she will be using every day-- so why not try some cool new lunch ideas!

You've heard the stories about all the 'lunch-trading' that goes on at school. The best way to ensure that your children eat the healthy lunch you pack for them is
to include them in the process. Let them help with the menu planning.

Kids don't have a lot of time for eating lunch, so try smaller portions but include more options. A smaller sandwich (bottom right) using a healthier wheat roll may actually be gobbled up! If you child only eats white bread, cut it into four sections; you can even share these among siblings. Then tuck in
some veggie sticks and dip, pretzels or trail mix, and the all-important dessert!

The turkey wrap (top right) is made with shredded turkey, thin sliced cantaloupe, and lettuce. The sweet cantaloupe makes this a real hit. Click to see the recipe for the mini quiches (left), from "Notebook: magazine". They're made with whole grain bread, shredded ham, and cheddar cheese.

This is where we will be posting all the events and happenings going on at The Gingham Grasshopper. We will give you sneak previews of new items such as baby bracelets or Christening gifts that will be available in our store (so you will get the first look!) We will also keep you informed of any sales events or coupons that our store is running. So be sure to check in often to see what is happening! A new baby and children's bracelet we will have soon is "Alluring". This is an all sterling silver bracelet with an engraved medallion. The medallion is small and will look best with names that are 6 letters or less. The engraving is done in an upright script. It will be available in sizes 4 inchs - 6.5 inches, and of course, it comes with a free 1/2 inch extender.

Also, we will have a new Christening or Baptism bracelet, "Sweet Stardust". So many customers have loved our "Silver Shimmer" bracelet made with white freshwater pearls and stardust beads, that we thought we would see if a Christening bracelet made entirely with stardust beads would be as popular. This little bracelet has a rounded cross bead as the focal point of the design.
